June 17th, 2009: The Motion Sick, The Fatal Flaw opens for Pansy Division

TT the Bears can be a frightening place to play on a weeknight. Bands can easily fall victim to the sometimes deadly silent crowd (if there is a crowd at all). Fortunately, The Motion Sick, The Fatal Flaw, and Pansy Division didn’t let their performances suffer from the lack of bodies in the audience this past Wednesday night at the Cambridge club. Energy amongst the musicians was high and all three sets were executed with tenacious spunk.

Pansy Division was the headliner of the night. Gracing Cambridge’s presence from San Francisco, the flamboyantly gay punk rock band tore up the stage with songs like “Dick of Death” and “That’s So Gay” (my personal favorite) The musicians’ firey on-stage attitudes rounded out their tight performance as both musically enjoyable and hilariously entertaining. Pansy Division deserves much more recognition then they get, but the band realizes they’re just a little too ahead of their time. Drummer Luis Illades explained after the show, “We realized eventually we’re just here to make the music we want to make. No record company will pick us up without making us change our lyrics and censoring us. We’ve accepted that.”

We can only hope that someday singing about being in a mature and consensual homosexual relationship will be as accepted as singing about rape, murder, and abuse against women.

Liv…. Take it from someone who has been thru the record biz: By giving up and saying “f.u.” to the music establishment, the Pansy Division have taken the first step toward global success. Now they are free to be truly creative and to have fun and make the music they want to make. By doing this they will find their audience–guaranteed! Good luck to the P.D.!

Hmm interesting. I like your comment at the end, “We can only hope that someday singing about being in a mature and consensual homosexual relationship will be as accepted as singing about rape, murder, and abuse against women.”
